Who is Lauren Layne?
A former e-commerce and web marketing manager from Seattle, Lauren relocated to New York City in 2011 to pursue a full-time writing career. She signed with her agent in 2012, and her first book was published in summer of 2013. Since then, she's written over two dozen books, many of which have hit the USA TODAY, New York Times, iBooks, and Amazon bestseller lists.
Lauren Layne, Off-The-Record
Hi! I'm Lauren Layne. So, when my official bio says that I'm an author, that's true, but what's even more true is that I'm living my dream life! I was absolutely that precocious child, who as an avid-reader thought that being an author was a "sure thing" when I was a grown-up. Ha. Real life kicked in hard, or what I thought was real life.
I went to college, got a political science degree, and contemplated law school. Instead of the lawyer direction, I found myself working at T-Mobile as a web and e-commerce marketing manager for much of my twenties. It was a solid career path, but by age 27 or so I realized that I simply wasn't interested in the 9-5 life. I wanted to be my own boss, and more specifically ... I wanted to tell stories. I wanted to make a living telling stories.
When my husband got a job offer in NYC (we were in our hometown of Seattle at the time), I said, "Sure, I'll relocate -- if I can have 3 months to make a go of the writing career before having to get a 'real job'." It took me about 6 months, but I got the agent, I got the book deal. And I've been writing and selling books ever since, albeit with some bumps along the way (read about them here).
So that's my career. On a personal level, I'm in my mid-thirties, and although I had a solidly sub-urban upbringing, I'm all about the city life now. My husband and I live in a high-rise in midtown Manhattan. It's tiny, but we've gladly traded the extra space and the yard for a view of the Empire State Building and minimalist living. Speaking of my husband, he's got his own awesome thing going on! His name is Anthony LeDonne, and he's part comedian, part cookbook author, part web designer. Check out his website here. We don't have kids, and don't really see them in our future, but who knows! We do have a Pomeranian named Bailey who makes frequent appearances on my Instagram feed.
I totally fall into that New York cliché of wearing a lot of black, and I've got a penchant for turtlenecks, which means half my wardrobe is black turtlenecks (long sleeve, 3/4 sleeves, shortsleeves, sleeveless, I can maintain my "look" in all seasons). My hair is both extremely frizzy and prematurely gray, so I count hair dye and Keratin treatments among my best friends. Self-described in three words: ambitious, organized, witty. I can't stand beer, but I love a good classic cocktail (sidecars, martinis, manhattans) or a cold glass of rosé on a summer afternoon.
I believe in "life by design," meaning that if you don't love (and you should love) the way your life is going ... you get to change it!
